The World at School

Alda has her first day of classes today. I resisted the urge to run into the bus and take a picture but I did get one of the bus pulling away. Wiping away tears of joy for her amazing experience. I can only imagine what it is like to be across the world on a bus heading to a new school in America.

And the award for first volunteer work of the year goes to...

Martina from Slovakia is spending the year at Grantsville High School. She got off to a great start the very first week with a volunteer job. She writes, "Every saturday, there is an co-operation in Grantsville/Tooele which is called Bountiful Baskets. Monday before, all the people that are interested in having cheaper and best-quality fruits and vegetables pay something and one person is going to pick all the stuff I dont know exactly where... The volunteers can come earlier and help to unpack all the stuff and devide them to each basket.. After all the people who payed before come and take their baskets, the volunteers clean the baskets up and help to clean the area."
Thanks Martina for being an amazing exchange student!

The World in the Great Salt Lake

We decided to take a quick trip to the Great Salt Lake, Antelope Island. The sand and water were so warm and Alda even caught a tiny brine shrimp. We brought our German friend Marleen also.

Where in the world is Galacia?
Alda's family was kind enough to send some pictures of traditional Galacian foods and festivals. Alda is also in the band that you see. She plays the drum that looks like a snare drum there. She is also in another band where she plays the accordion.

A day with a Thai student

We had the pleasure of spending a day with a wonderful student from Thailand. My friend was hosting and had a lot of work to do so we grabbed him for a little Thai education.
He was immediately greeted by Keisha, my 10 year old's service dog.
Then we went shopping to finish Alyssa's packing for Korea. A quick trip to a Korean restaurant for lunch proved to be a yummy treat.
Afterward he picked out ingredients for a green curry dish from the international market.
When we came home he played Wii with the boys while Alyssa and I finished packing.
My first real Thai food was amazing! I cut up the chicken to his specifications and he carefully added ingredients and stirred to perfection. Chicken, green curry, coconut milk, fresh kefir lime leaves, basil and lemongrass over rice. It was the most delicious thing I've had in a very long time. Definitely on my favorites list.
